Does anyone know of any software which can highlight all instances of a keyword or a key phrase within a body of text?

This can be done using the Google toolbar, or a BookMarklet if it is online pages you're checking. Beyond that, depending on your needs, and whether you want to analyse text within source code, where white-space may be variable, etc.

Your answer is intriguing. I was hoping to be able to check text before I loaded it. You seem to be about to give me the answer in your second sentence but then ....

Please let me know what you had in mind.

The google toolbar works great for this. You don't have to load the page online, just view the html file off of your harddrive. You put the keywords in the google search box of your toolbar, but don't push search. Then you hit the highlight button on the google toolbar, and voila! Instant keyword highlighting!

If you're just writing copy in word, you can do a search/find and then highlight each instance. I do that a lot, also. It's not as automatic, but it works.

To me, highlighting the keyword phrases is the best way to eyeball for keyword density. I don't use numbers, just eyeballs!

The Google toolbar works on plain text files viewed through your browser too.

For Dreamweaver users, the Dreamweaver Find and Replace function set to 'Find All' just within current document is extremely effective too. Depends what you're trying to acheive though, e.g. back to that question of whether you want to include mentions in invisible elements, such as ALT tags.

I've never used the highlight function on the Google toolbar before.

It is easier than using the "find" from the "edit" menu on the browser.

Thanks!

Thanks, Ammon and Jill.

The highlight function on the Google toolbar applied to files on my computer is exactly what I wanted.

The Dreamweaver approach is good too, but as usual, Google delivers what I need in a simple and effective way.

I can look at the ALT contents individually since I am not usually dealing with too many.
