Yahoo just launched a new site design this morning. I think it looks fantastic. They have finally reconciled with all of the clutter they need to show and I think it is one of the best portal layouts I've seen.

They have a lot of poop to display but by using proper design principles I think they have done a good job of presenting a ton of content.

Elements of good design:

1) Grouping (remember those gestalt principles?)
2) Good typography
3) The use of whitespace
4) Use of colors to group elements and add contrast
5) The use of recognizable icons to give the proper visual clues
6) Proper semantic layout. The print industry has known about using proper headings and sub-headings for a long time. They work on the Web also.

The sinker is.. They moved to a tableless layout. Yes 95% of the content is positioned using CSS only. Looking at their site they use a few tables here and there. At a first glance it seems they used tables in places they wanted to center or left/right align content that was nested inside of an already positioned <div> Looks like they just bypassed all the float bugs as well as the align=center problems and went with a few strategic tables.

I will be examining this layout to learn more for sure.

I must be seeing the wrong page. In what I'm seeing, while there is some CSS, there are still a number of tables, and even font tags. Am I looking at the wrong page?

Interesting, you must be looking at another page. Not sure why. Here is an image of what I see.

I checked the source and found only a few <font> tags still in use. Otherwise it is mostly all CSS.

Wow. That is not at all what I saw, even after clearing cache and dumping cookies.

Ah, I get it now -- you're looking at the Front Page Beta. Looks nice.

When I use Firefox or Opera (MAC) I get the page Ransak posted.

But when I use Safari I get the old version.........despite clearing the cache.

Don't think it is a 'beta' any longer, there was one when the design was first changed. I guess the new design still has some problems in some browsers, the beta version didn't let certain browsers try out the new look either.

Wow, who would have thought Firefox and Opera would get the royal treatment over other browsers.

But this change is only for www.yahoo.com not for others.
My www.yahoo.com.au is still the same thing.

Ransak - you say the "good design" includes:

QUOTE
3) The use of whitespace

Sorry, but the white space is nearly all grey on my screen because the page bgcoclor hasn't been set!
