Hi all,

I have to admit we have always carried out SEO work for more traditional B2B businesses and don't usually travel into this area. Our client has one high quality site where there are some mild sexual images present. Currently they use a disclaimer on the index page where the user agrees to enter/leave - usual stuff.

We have noticed though, on first analysis of this project, that 99% of the site is available through the SE's. So my questions are:

How important is this type of disclaimer? If it is a legal necessity then surely all SE listings should redirect the user back to the front page?

If we are to redirect all users back to the index page and disclaimer then surely promotion of internal pages, where the more explicit content can be found, is a rather pointless exercise?

Thanks for any advice -

Best

I'd probably just add an ICRA Label to the site. Bear in mind that this might get you behind the "Safe Searching" feature of most of the search engines - depending upon the level of nudity and sexuality that is there. Then again, the search engines are likely to spot it and add it to the filter themselves at some stage, anyway.

Bear in mind that it's been several years (last century, actually) since I looked into this question - but at that time, the ICRA was the proper answer to your question. There might be other solutions that are more appropriate. I'd still start here, I think.

Hi Grumpus

Thanks for the reply - yes I would be happier if we can add an ICRA label there and will suggest that. It would seem a sensible way to classify the site to the SE's. I want to SEO certain parts of this site but I am worried about getting them seen before the 'entry' page.

So is adding the ICRA a 'get out' clause for this entry page. Do I lose the legal necessity (if it exists at all) for users to 'agree' that they are over 18 etc. to view content?

Actually, the disclaimer on a site doesn't have any legal strength. People accidentally click the wrong button on things all the time. Further more, people who can't even read the disclaimer have a 50:50 chance of accepting a thing they couldn't possibly have read.

So, don't sweat them not seeing the disclaimer, because it isn't worth the virtual webspace it is written on. A PICS label or ICRA label are the best legal defences right now.

Hi Ammon

Thanks very much for that - that was exactly what I was worried about. I'll get an ICRA on as Grumpus suggested and carry on as normal.

Now for the harder question of working out a way of to stop my fiancee getting annoyed at me for working on the site, she sits right next to me in the same office. I've tried telling her it's just work and code is code but....

The answer to that one, Kino, Is to keep shaking your head sadly at the screen while you work. When you have her attention, say how sad you are that some men need stuff like that, and how lucky you are to have her. wink-2.gif

Ammon you're utterly terrible! And a damn fine marketer. wink-2.gif

I have a client in the popular culture business and they have some (mild) adult content. One thing I've found is to really research links and directories and contact them to clarify they're rules before paying for listings. It's amazing how many will take your money then reject you.

I am also having a running battle with Overture who approve some ads, reject others - regardless of whether they're adult related - and now say we have to have a warning page before each "adult" section or they'll delist them all.

Hi

Thanks for that Ammon - been practicing looking sad, humming and muttering comments about tables.../ but you're advice is more sound wink-2.gif

Sanity - thanks for the warm welcome. I wish I could post here more often, but it gets a bit hectic in the office! I do try and read during my numerous coffee breaks though.

Off-topic, how have things been going with you since you moved out to Russia, Nick?

Great actually. A few things take a bit of getting used to: the occasional -20C temperatures, the regular vodka (which has to be drunk after *every* purchase – I am deeply worried if the whole of Russia turns into a consumer society!)

Life with Anna is great though, I could never regret the move and the technical guys we have on board now are extremely good. We keep pinching staff from Russian companies – but it’s great to have the resources to pick and choose from. While it feels quite strange to have left the UK, I actually feel far more connected with the internet community as a whole now. Having Russian net culture opening up to me is also very interesting.

It’s a pity I left Brighton though before you and Dave got down there. I am coming back for a flying visit in a few weeks so I will have to drag you all out for a few pints of stout. wink-2.gif
