Rumours of a new payment service to rival PayPal.

Would you trust Google to handle your online payments ?

That's interesting news, Travis. My present banker doesn't have a slogan saying 'Do No Evil', so why wouldn't I go for this? I guess we'll be seeing the Google Webmastercard shortly thereafter. smile.gif

Yes, I would, as much as PayPal.

I think the big risk for Google is how to maintain dominance without becoming the next Microsoft, i.e. maintaining their trusted brand position (trustmark).

I don't think this precludes them from getting into finance, or holding people's personal info, as long as they use this data responsibly, and - more importantly - that we all perceive that they're using it for our benefit.

The wallet sounds like an idea that they should pursue, if only to try to diversify what they do some.

I'm not sure how you set up something like a Google wallet, and then don't enter into the same arena as Paypal. And, it does seem like a niche that could use some competition. Is Google the company that should step up?

I saw this patent application from yahoo! last week that describes something that does sound closer to what paypal offers. I would guess that if they went through the trouble of applying for a patent, they are probably considering offering something similar, too.

Cool news, at least because PayPal don't accept registration from my country, Vietnam. Sad.
