Google updates search software with Desktop 2

QUOTE
Google Inc. updated its software for searching PC hard drives and the Internet, giving the free program a new look and adding tools that deliver personalized information based on a user's Web surfing habits.

Information here from Google about the new version:

http://desktop.google.com/about.html

The page about the sidebar looks like it is worth reading, too:

Parts of the description in the article sound a lttle like the Bookmark manager that I wrote about here:

While it doesn't mention bookmarks, it does talk about using the navigation history. See the section on the sidebar page about "Web History Results Page."

Intersting write up from BBC News: Google tool watches as you work

QUOTE
Google's desktop search software is being overhauled to become a digital helper that reacts to what users do.

and
QUOTE
The revamped desktop search system is much more active and keeps an eye on what users do and instantly displays relevant webpages, blog entries, documents, messages and photos in a hovering, on-screen panel.

As with anything Google it's always worth weighing up the usefulness as opposed to the loss of privacy.

Nice one, Sophie.

Saw this three part article this weekend: Google Has Your Data: Should You Be Afraid?

I think that you are right that it is a balancing of how much information we want to share versus how much personalization we want to have added to our searches.
