There's a previous discussion that really does give a lot of detail on the very best ways to attain links titled "Linking Strategies" that has only become more relevant as time has passed. Start there. You may not need to read anything else on the topic.

Funny how "good content" is the bottom of the first list
Personally, I like "hulabaloo" or "buzz" - go sell your wife on ebay, it'll get people to link to your site. Ok, don't actually sell her (that would be the end of the buzz), keep the buzz going - go back on the final bidder and say you'll never let her go, try to offer a goat instead, etc. etc. Keep the buzz rolling! Even if you do something stupid and make that public enough ("see this stupid webmaster: >LINK<") it will get you links, if your content is good enough, those links might turn into regulars (regardless of why they came first) and those regulars might just link to you normally if you ask them properly :-). Personally, I've never asked for a link, though I do offer good members / users / customers of my sites the chance to link to their sites from mine. Oh well, perhaps I'm missing my potential :-). Another thing about links: FOLLOW YOUR REFERRER LOGS - you should be logging those, right? Check back on those referrers and if you can, contact the webmaster / site and let them know you appreciate it. If it's a forum, join and say "hi", if it's a blog, leave a comment. Find out why they're linking to you, if they have any problems, rectify them; if they have any questions, answer them. Let them know that you (as the person behind that site they're linking to) are a worthwhile linking partner, it looks so much better when other visitors stumble upon that link to see that the person they're linking to actually cares about their visitors. (even if you just want their money, ehm links <evil grin>) |

QUOTE(softplus) Funny how \"good content\" is the bottom of the first list Couldn't agree more. As the old saying has it: You're preaching to the choir here on that one. QUOTE To get sales to your site, you design a site that attracts sales. You don't send out emails to other companies saying that if you'll buy from them if they'll buy from you. So why do webmasters send out reciprocal linking requests? Simple, because its less work, and used to be an easy way to cheat the system. However, times have changed, and if you think about it, your company may not want to be associated with 'cheats' and corner-cutting publicly anyway. So lets look at how to approach it like the marketing objective it is today. You make it a part of the design. You build link-attracting content, and link-helping features right into the website. If you want links, make something that people will want to link to. Think 'Viral Marketing' - something people will want to tell others about, some through links, but an unseen majority will do so by passing the URL to family and friends via email and chat. The same content that acquires 4 inbound links on its own merit, will also inspire a hundred bookmarks and 40 mentions in viral marketing. Reciprocal linking doesn't carry those side-benefits, and I can tell you that the side benefits are sometimes worth a lot more than the links. Source: Linking Strategies discussion at Cre8asite |

Hi Jackson:
Good luck. Many good ideas here. I'd read through the suggestion by Black Knight. Worthwhile to read. Here is how I started, with virtually no idea about anything with regard to web sites, let alone SEO Identify the keywords you wish to rank for. Run google for those keywords. Go to marketleap.com. run the urls of the top websites in google for the keywords. Check MSN and Yahoo's lists of backlinks for those sites. Start contacting those webmasters looking for backlinks. In many cases you will need to give reciprocal links. Make sure you have appropriate links pages to be able to do that. You can email them, call them, mail them, etc. There are also automated tools to help you do this. Go to sources like this one http://info.vilesilencer.com/main.php?rock...iendly-list.php It is a large source of available directories from which to get one way directory links. It appears that googles ratings/rankings of backlinks has been reassessed with the most recent google update, Jagger (starting 9/22 and seeming to wind down now). Regardless links are still of prime importance. It would appear though that highly relevant links are more valuable then ever. Focus on links that most closely relate to the theme of your site. The content discussions above are totally relevant. Good content on its own draws links. Writing articles with links back to your site is a way you can control this on your own. In some cases linking is a function of the purpose of your site. In my business/web site I directly contact certain people/principals to arrange for links. There are various strategies on how to obtain links, with a Zero budget, a limited budget, and a large budget. Assess how much, if anything you can spend. If you are willing/capable of spending there are a variety of ways to best use this money. Dave |
