The latest PR update Options

Posts across internet forums are bursting with glee that Google is finally updating its public PageRank values. It seems that full roll-out started within the past few hours. For my sites, I haven't seen nothin' yet

BigDaddy seems to be on more datacenters too, with reports of routinely hitting it via normal Google search.

So... what is everyone seeing?

Yep, I blogged about the PR rollout about an hour ago, I guess. My new sites are now showing pagerank on 4 datacenters, and some of my old sites show changes as well. I haven't been keeping track of the BD changes, because every time I look at a BD datacenter, I see nothing different for any of my terms, so I decided I didn't care.

I checked between Google's old database and the Bigdaddy and my ranking has not changed, but the serps have.

My PR remained the same at 4 also. It seems it will be at 4 4ever!

My site goes from 4 to 5 and back depending on the time of day.
I reckon that is because it is being served to me from different data centers at different times of the day.
The other night it was 6 but that was probably a fluke.
I was under the impression that the page rank did not necessarily affect the serps though and I have seen proof of this.
Also it seems to me that I read somewhere in a forum or on the G site that G only posts the update to let us know where we stand as they always know what the current page rank is.
So I don't know what it matters 4, 5 or 6 except that with a 5 or 6 I am less likely to be dropped for reciprical links.

But inspite of that I like to call the site, late at night when the page rank is 5 for that old warm and fuzzy feeling.

Newbie question - how can I manually check my PR on a datacenter? I have run a couple of the tools people point to, but in my limited experience, the tools can be a bit flaky, so I like to be able to check myself.

If you have the google tool bar in place call the data center in question using the ip address and then just do a search for your url.

If you search for "Click Here" or "News", you will find all the super PR 9 & 10 sites, so PageRank must affect the SERP's in some manner.

When all else fails for relevance, PageRank is utilised. Many people dont believe in PageRank, and when you ask them to explain the above situation, you will hear something like "PageRank is irrelevant, because I read it on another forum" or "The News Sites pay for those spots on Google".

Both meaningless answers.

Whilst ever I can test it like the above example in 3 seconds, I am convinced that it still plays a part.

Toolbar PR is an integer, but the real PR is most likely the original logarthmic number.

So think of a logarithmic scale with base 10, where we have 10 to the power n. If n is Pagerank, then all numbers between

Scores of 100,000 and 999,999 will have PageRank 5.

So in the same PageRank band, your site could have 9 times more PageRank than another site.

It also explains why getting through the first bands is so easy, but getting from 5-6 is very difficult

We have been PageRank 5 for ages.

I dont think PageRank uses base 10, but the mathematic principals are the same.

for what its worth there seems to be an update on reported numbers of links too...

Yes, re number of links. Mine went from 851 to 631. I would normally expect a slow growth in number of links, so there must be some 'raising the bar' phenomenon here.

I noticed that the beginner's guide at SEOmoz, which had a PR7 last update, has a PR0 with this new one

Hey Rand,

Get the feeling that our old friends at Google might have a bit of a grudge going with SEO that doesn't originate from the horses uh, mouth?

Noticed my site is doing quite nicely overall but there was a definite shifting away from the SEO pages (a few went from PR5 to PR0), and yes I'm playing it straight, to the marketing and copy writing focused sections. Is all the same to me, have been easing way back on the whole "we do seo" thing for awhile, but it is interesting none the less.

Maybe they figure if an SEO page doesn't change as often as their algorithms it's no longer relevant. Maybe they're right!

Rand, I'm sure that's just a temporary glitch. I'd bet by the time it's over, it will have its PR back.

This is strange - even for Google.

I got busy with some coding and took a break about an hour ago and just pulled my head up again to notice that the changes that were showing a few hours ago are all different now. An hour ago several of the pages that had dropped to Zero in the bar were back somewhere near where they had been. Now some are up, some down.

This isn't the first time I've watched Google do a dance, but it's looking to me like a pretty lively jig this time.
