Hi hopeo

Welcome to the forums.

There are a lot of strategies that you could follow for building links to your site. Here are a few:

1. Have something interesting, unique, humorous, or engaging, or a mix of all of those, on your pages.

2. Offer a tool or application on your pages that people will link to.

3. Look for regional or topical directories that look like people use them, and that may bring your site traffic inspite of search engines.

4. Provide some way for people to interact with your site, either through a forum, or blog with comments, or a wiki, or reviews, or some other way that builds community, and makes people feel like they have some investment in the site.

5. Work to make your site appear to the the authority on a subject to people who might be interested in what you have to offer.

6. If you offer goods for sale, have a unique selling proposition for your site that makes it stand out from others within the same niche.

7. Write about controversial topics that people might be interested in.

8. Combine your online efforts at attracting attention with an offline marketing plan that make people aware of your site, and lead people to it.

9. Sponsor something positive online, like a nonprofit event, or a contest that benefits people, or community efforts that helps people. Don't worry about links - worry about building positive relationships with people. Then do it again. Then again.

10. Build positive business relationships with people who run sites that complement yours. Examples: A financial services company might know a lawyer who can help their clients, and refers people to those clients. The lawyer in turn sends people to the financial services company. They may send links back and forth to each other, or they may not. But the relationship is better than links. A slightly different example: a craft shop that specializes in pottery refers people who are interested in glassware to another shop that specializes in glassware. And the glassblower refers people interested in pottery back to the potter.

Backlink=link from another site (external) to yours
Read around, really, this would be more helpful than ask people about things that were mentioned a million times

While I think Bill has everything covered (doesn't he always?), I thought this thread was pretty interesting when it came up: http://www.cre8asiteforums.com/forums/inde...showtopic=30332

backlinks are also known as inlinks. I think the term 'inlinks' is actually gaining more ground and becoming more widely used since it just makes more sense than backlinks.

tongue.gif Yahooism or not... I like it... "in" seems more intuitive than "back" wink.gif

Backlinks are incoming links to a website. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website.

To build backlinks you must concentrate on following points;

- Add fresh content in your site
- Prepare blog
- Submit articles
- Submit your site to different directories

These points definitely help you in building backlinks.

hopeo, what type of website are you trying to get people to link to? Bill's advice is very good, but there may be more specific things you can do depending on the type of website you are promoting.

As has often been said in books and articles, it is easier to come up with a good idea worth spreading than it is to get people to spread a bad idea. To translate this in terms of a website, it is easier to come up with a good product/content worth linking to than it is to get people to link to a bad product/content.

Let me add a word of support for the adoption of the word 'inlinks' instead of 'backlinks'. I think it should be used wherever you can since it is so much more easily understood.

Once we have that one solidly established, then the next one after that is 'outlink'. I'm sure I don't need to explain. One way to encourage 'inlinks' is to be generous in adding good outlinks to your blog posts and your web pages. The Internet is about dialogue. It's better to give than to receive. Cast your bread upon the waters. etc. ... You get the drift. smile.gif

And a "do-the-hokey-cokey-and-we-turn-around-link" - because that's what it's all about! smile.gif

p.s. never heard of inlink - still, I never deal with Yahoo stuff that much either.

Sorry Barry - was not taking the mickey out of 'inlinks' just the in and out stuff got to me smile.gif

Backlinks is good and bad in my view, they are links 'back' to your site, but they could also imply 'back' as in 'return' as in 'reciprocal'

'inlinks' could get confusing through, with internal links.

OK, this is getting thoroughly off the topic ... but actually I quite like the term inlinks - but it does have some humor potential, too smile.gif
