We do quite well in Google but poor in Yahoo. We are in the Yahoo directory, we certainly show up for several keywords when we do searches but the traffic overall from Yahoo is quite poor and I don't understand how can a site do very well in Google and MSN and pretty bad in Yahoo.

What are some of the major differences, any ideas?

It might be that our pages are not indexed in Yahoo - for very specific searches we show up at no:1 at google or msn but nowhere to be found in Yahoo.

Well, I have a personal theory (completely unverified or tested in any way) that the people using each search engine have tendencies towards different interests.

Testing this might be rather difficult - it would be very interesting to see a tag cloud for the top couple thousand search terms in each engine.

My theory is based on the idea that each major search engine (MSN, Yahoo, Google) arose from a very different mental space, and attracts a user body which has a different general cloud of interests.

Microsoft - mega technology corporation, monopoly, big business, etc.
Google - intellectuals start business, strong ethical concept behind the business, strong independent streak, etc.
Yahoo - one of the first entries into Internet businesses, with a focus on making things easy to use, directories, appealing to mainstream media interests.

I think that the most popular searches on all engines are relatively similar - but once you get into the middle range of searching, you may see a 'clumping' effect amongst the search terms used more frequently in each engine.

I'd be very curious to know if anybody is familiar with a study along these lines.

Does anybody out there have a site which receives more visits from either Yahoo or MSN? All of mine are predominantly Google, as well.

Lucky its not the other way around.

Your never going to be able to dominate all the search engines for a competitive term.

What you will find is that each engine algorithm will respond differently to your page and accompanying neighbourhood of pages.

We have always found Yahoo easy to rank on, but Google takes more time and effort.

90% of our market use Google and MSN, so you would be best advised to make a similar analysis of your stats, and find which engines are popular in your part of the world.

Personally, I think I understand more how Google works than I do for Yahoo. I have no problem with MSN, you just need H1 tags, keywords in the urls and a few links.

But Yahoo has always been a very mysterious SE. Plus there's not a lot of SEO resources around Yahoo. You just have to see this forums: no sticky for Yahoo. It's the same in many other forums.

It seems that Yahoo likes old domains and love links, no matter how relevant they are, the more, the better. I guess that's all I know tongue.gif

well yes - but to be more specific - if have a very specific search phrase
aaa bb xxx yyy zzz

I am easily at the top in Google and for some MSN, but nowhere to be found in Yahoo. That tells me not all pages are indexes in Yahoo, maybe only the index and the top level pages.

Is there a way to make Yahoo easily index all pages like Google sitemaps?

Interesting thing to notice is that for that specific search phrase the top 3 pages are full of yahoo stores. Surprised?

I agree to all of the above. I certainly support your view as well, Joe, that the audiences for the different search engines are somewhat different.

Another factor is that Google, I believe, puts much more emphasis on the inlinks to the web page, whereas Yahoo! and MSN put more emphasis on what is on the page. I always find it fascinating to look at the cached copy, which has a link on the Google SERP underneath each entry. You will often note that the keywords for which you searched are only mentioned in links to the web page and do not appear in the text on the web page.

Google Sitemaps do not make Google index more pages than they would already do based on your sites value. This is a misconception :-).

You can however, create a text URL listing of your sites URLs and submit that to Yahoo (you can now also submit RSS / Atom feeds as well). However, this is a one-time submission (ie you can delete the file after it has been submitted). But it's better than nothing. Many of the Google Sitemap generators can also export the URLs for a text listing for Yahoo (or other purposes). You can submit it to Yahoo at http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request

However, as already mentioned, they will also crawl your site when they find links to it. Is your Yahoo directory entry "targeted" for those keywords as well? I have found Yahoo to be a bit slower lately in regards to indexing speed... I don't know if that is a general issue or if it just shows in my test sites (not that it matters much to me, since I prefer to target the other engines who bring me more traffic) biggrin.gif

Cheers
John

That's interesting - I've been finding the opposite! Or, more accurately, I've been finding that Yahoo finds and indexes new sites more quickly, but updates that index less frequently.

Boy isn't that the truth! I've held #1 position in Google, Yahoo, and MSN for the search term 'web development contractor' for the 8 months or so and now I finally dropped to #3 in MSN for that search term phrase.

Guess who's at #1 and #2!

Yahoo! Definitely seems to be more focused on on -page criteria, as we too are killing the serps for google and MSN, looks like it is research time once again.
