That is truly an incredible amount of money.

Then again, the YouTube site ran three press releases today, too:

CBS and YouTube Strike Strategic Content and Advertising Partnership

Sony BMG Music Entertainment Signs Content License Agreement with YouTube

Universal Music Group and YouTube Forge Strategic Partnership

It seems that Google purchased more than a video based social site - they bought into some serious business relationships with some very large and influential companies.

It'll be interesting to see what happens from a user interface perspective. As much as YouTube has become the more popular service; I'd have to say that Google Video's interface is 100% my favorite. It doesn't, however, offer anywhere near the social interaction possible in YouTube.

I'm surprised that this has actually happened; I was definitely one of those who was seriously doubting the rumors!

Both systems have, in my opinion, a long ways to go before they even approach a really user-friendly interface: but combining the strength and expertise of both companies could result in something really interesting down the line.

What I can't get over is how quickly YouTube has come up from startup.
Whois says the domain was registered February of 2005. I don't remember when I first started to hear about YouTube, but whenever it was YouTube was already pretty big!

What's the next big thing? Why is YouTube so popular? Is it because the bandwidth is almost available everywhere or is it because they turned the technical issues into something simple that runs everywhere? What limitations do we currently have that might be blocking the next YouTube - and what would be possible once they're resolved?

What would be possible once everyone has multi-megabit up and down streams?

John

PS Anyone remember the Fantastic Corp.? How did "Real" miss this application - which could have been done with their technology as well?

Ease of use seems to be one reason for YouTube's success.

They also made it pretty easy to comment upon videos and tag them.

When Nike started posting to YouTube last year, that gained them some momentum. Other companies have produced ads for YouTube - ones that people actually want to watch. smile.gif

This Forbes pre-acquisition article isn't bad - Video Fixation

A skit from Saturday Night Live, gained them a lot of traffic.

One of the things I like is that you can embed videos from YouTube on your own site very easily.

Well I for one believe the reason YouTube has such a large user group which none of the other engines or players have really been able to replicate is because much of how YouTube started.

Much of what YouTube had initially was very sketchy if not adult content, as well as a lot of copyrighted content. Although they "did their best" to control it, really it was days if not weeks at a time that the content would stay there.

Google, Yahoo, and the other players have from the get go stayed very much on top of that content hindering the actual popluarity of their platforms.

That's just my cynical point of view.

Youtube is super successful project started last year in garage smile.gif
It gained so much worth in just 19 months and less than 70 employees.

On other side of picture it is open defeat acceptance of Google Videos by Google though its not bad to buy competitors if you cannot beat them. But it also raises point that - is there any successful project by Google after adwords?

i think No.

... or ... does Google *need* any other successful project other than Adwords and search? Imagine that all those other Google "toys" were just give-aways to build brand-awareness smile.gif. They certainly have enough money to do it...

"YouTube founder rides video clips to dot-com riches."

Some youtube history:

I don't think I've ever seen a website's searchbox displayed in the SERPs before.

Take a closer look.
Attached Image

Oh wait, its youtube. duh.gif Hey, wasn't there some kind of connection between youtube and Google a while back?

Its fortunate they treat everyone the same in the SERPs, including their own properties. smile.gif

Its funny, but I accidentally made a typo and searched for yourtube, but look who came up first (as if to say, you couldn't possibly mean yourtube, you meant youtube -- here it is! smile.gif).

Just an observation.

Well, the search box works for other sites, too. Though, when I tried to do a search/typo search for Cre8asite Forums, there was no search box. Maybe the box appears, when the company is old enough and has a one-word name? I am sure someone could fill us in on why the box appears.

But I don't think it is specifically for YouTube, though it does look suspicious, that even on a typo, G showed the box for YT. When I typoed searches for Microsoft, no box appeared.

Interesting. I wonder how they determine which sites they'll display the search box with and which they won't.
