Google is using an out-dated DMOZ description for the home page of a site for which I am responsible. There is no editor for most categories and subcategories that could list the site.

I'd thought of applying to be an editor of some of those categories, just to make sure it's done. Though I know more about "my" site than others in the category, I could probably improve the listings somewhat.

Another option is the noODP meta tag.

Thoughts?

Go for "noodp". Do you get any traffic from the dmoz? Do you think it would change if you had the "correct" listing? wink-2.gif

There's no harm in applying to be editor of the cat. Just be honest in your intentions and that you will be improving the cat as a whole.

I hate to ask the obvious, but have you tried to update the desciption using the 'update listing' feature in the category itself?

Updates are treated by many editors as a priority.

You use an odd terminology 'outdated' for a description. Incorrect or factually innacurate (products/services/location changed) descriptions we'd like to know about. Just suggest factual corrections without trying to hype the description at the same time though, or the baby/bathwater scenario may come into play.

The original description fit what the site owners did a few years ago. Since then they have dropped one facet of what is in the DMOZ description and focused on another. They no longer do most of what is in the description.

What if there is no editor in the category or subcategory?

What if there is no editor in the category or subcategory?

There are other higher up editors who can edit many if not all categories.

You didn't say if you'd submitted a update listing feature Liz. If not I'd start there.

Oh and welcome to Cre8asite gimmster! wavey.gif

Maybe I was being short sighted, but given that the subcategories and categories are without editor, I expected a loooong wait unless I wanted to volunteer to edit the category myself.

As of today I've both put up NOODP metas and filled out the forms for updating descriptions and putting them in more appropriate categories. NOODP is a quicker fix that's in my control. If/when the DMOZ description is updated I can take the NOODP metas out and see what happens.

So far, so good. smile.gif

Google has replaced the DMOZ description of the home page with the meta description I wrote myself. I'll keep an eye on DMOZ and see what happens.
