So far I like what I see; but I feel like there may be more to this than meets the eye.

Have you seen Microsoft's tool for analyzing online user intent of keywords?

If you like that tool, you might like the paper behind it:

Detecting Online Commercial Intention (OCI)

The tool uses the content of top landing pages and content of the first search result page to try to detect whether queries are commercial or informational. It's an interesting approach, and why I like looking at search results for a particular keyword phrase while thinking about using it.

Fascinating article, I'd like to read it again some time (just skimmed it for now) and check up on some of Microsoft's referenced research in the bibliography. Its worth getting a head start for this one. I'm going to follow your lead Bill, and put this tool to the test any time I google something as well. I'm sure the AOL Stalker tool will come in handy as well.

I am very interested in identifying and analyzing keyword queries with large volumes, but poor commercial intent. It could be an another bullet to identify untapped niches online and give a glimpse into some future events. After all, the aggregate sum of online marketing can't remain in the stone age forever.
CODE
Result: NonCommercial (Query)
Probability for Commercial Query:
0.19834

Over a year ago, I saw Bill Gates confidently assert that developing technology for delivering personally tailored content, to different personality types, is Microsoft's future competitive advantage over Google. hmm.gif

PS: I just read a fascinating article from future now (awesome blogging this month from them) about usability design and personality types. I'm bringing it up because it reminded me of an implication of OCI.

Doesnt seem that accurate, although only tested it on a few things, It picked up on amazon.com being commercial, but said microsoft.com was not commercial.
It even reckons the (for test purposes) query "purchase viagra" was non commercial....

From your grokdotcom linked article (which was well worth reading and following on from - thanks):

For you to achieve your goals, your audience must first achieve theirs. That means presenting what they want, when and where they want it — even if you have to make a single product page speak to 4 different "types" of people. But that's the beauty of the medium.

Howard Kaplan missed the greatest beauty of the medium: you can have four (or more) page versions tailored to the 'type' or 'demographic' of visitor. It requires thinking about how best to determine who to serve what (including SE bots) but the potential conversion increase is considerable.

kensplace:

I have been finding some interesting combination differences as well as intreguing word 'power ratings' in my niches much as you noted with 'purchase'. Am running some tests to see what conversion change may accompany various recombinations.

Using your (for testing purposes only smile.gif) example:

Note the difference from word order:
[purchase viagra] : 0.40147 : NonCommercial (Query)
[viagra purchase] : 0.34911 : NonCommercial (Query)

[prescribe viagra] : 0.52563 : Commercial (Query)
[viagra prescribe] : 0.55433 : Commercial (Query)

[viagra prescription] : 0.74827 : Commercial (Query)
[prescription viagra] : 0.40558 : NonCommercial (Query)

'find' rates above 'buy'?:
[buy viagra] : 0.68064 : Commercial (Query)
[find viagra] : 0.8518 : Commercial (Query)

I have to admit, this discussion has really changed my opinion of MSN Live. After seeing what type of patents they are going after, in comparison to yahoo and ask (probably on Bill's blog), i'm taking them much more seriously now. They seem to have lead in behavioral marketing technology.
.....Microsoft's recent research into reading people's brain's really scares me.

iamlost; I hope you share with us your impression of the microsoft user intent tool after you have had a chance to shuffle around your ads and put the data to the test. Good luck in finding a soft spot in what is otherwise an over saturated market. smile.gif

Microsoft Adlabs has several interesting and helpful tools.

I particularly liked insights from their keyword search funnel; http://adlab.microsoft.com/SearchFunnel/

There are several tools worth investigating at adlab.microsoft.com
