How much people do you think only remember the domain name, not the extension?
How many of those go to the browser right away and how much type it in Google?

I might end up working on a .ru domain for an US language market, so I am trying to research and prepare myself on the topic.

Thanks.

It's all a question of percentages, Yura. Certainly a good slice of prospects will type in the name they remember into the Google search box. So if you're first up for that, you're fine with them.

However some will type it into the address field without www or .com, even just by accident. In that case, the default browser behaviour is to send them to www.domainname.com. Others will guess it's .com and try that version in the address bar. It then depends what happens if they do that. Will they end up with someone else or will there be visual information that allows them to find you? You've got to estimate what that percentage is and what will happen.

No choice is 100% correct anyway. People may not remember the domain name or may mistype it. By trying to work with these percentages, it may help you to clarify what you should do.

So it looks to me like this is saying that a .COM is still the way to go if we play the percentage game just because of the browser behaviour and the people behaviour.

Well, Barry, what percentage of people, by your estimation, don't type the domain extension or go straight to Google? Percentage is fine by me, really. I just want to know, if it is 10% or 50%.

I have no facts but notice that myspace, google, ebay, yahoo, and youtube make the top ten search words (according to Keyword) so I imagine that the ones that use the address bar just type the domain name too (and not the .com)

As a humourous note I hope those that typed google as a keyword did not do that while in google smile.gif

Off Topic offtopicAs far as I recall, "google" is one of the most popular non-adult searches on Google - and possibly Yahoo.

Amazing! Just how hard can it be to type google.com on an address bar instead of google in a search engine? What can I say?
