Identical Links On Same Page Options

I have 2 identical links on same page but with different anchor text. I know google will retain only one link for page rank, but I would like to know if the second anchor text will reduce the importance of the first anchor text (for keywords). Thanks.

How do you know google will only retain 1 link for page rank? Assume nothing!

However in answer to your question, there is no problem with having more than one link pointing to a specific page. For example, in your primary navigation you could have a 'support' link and in the main body the anchor text 'contact our support team'. At the bottom of the page you could have another link with the anchor text 'help setting up your widget'. All of these links are natural and fit into the flow of the page so I wouldn't worry about affecting the importance of your keywords since each one used different anchor text.

You should also remember that the search engines take note of the surrounding text (for context) and the target page (for relevance). Which is why 'click here' linking to 'page2.htm' would score less than 'more information about widgets' linking to 'widget-information.htm'

I have lots of pages on my website that link to the same destination page at multiple locations. Sometimes three links to the same destinations on one page. These could be two text links plus an image link. I can't say if this has helped my rankings but I think that I can say with great confidence that it has not hurt them a bit. These pages hold topRanks in fairly difficult SERPs.

Might multiple links to the same page signal that the destination is especially important?

If you link to a page multiple times and with good reason for the visitor you should feel good about doing so. If the anchor text is logical but different, why should that cause a problem.

I used to spend a lot of time deciding how my anchor text should be worded. I learned that doing what is logical did not change the results.
