Google Changes Its Favicon, Rebranding R Us Options

An interesting, if minor, observation: I noticed that Google has changed its favicon from the capitalized-colorful-G-in-a-box to a more curvy lower-case g in blue. Go to: http://www.google.com/favicon.ico and do a hard refresh.

Heh, I noticed it looks like the Cre8 logo, too.

Next they'll be consulting people on how to build websites. Oh wait.

It's certainly very close. If you still prefer the old favicon, they still have it for subdomains like blogsearch.google.com. I guess it's just a matter of time. .. or perhaps they'll drop the new one. I don't think it's all that good.

Ah, thanks for pointing this out ... I noticed it too, panicked and thought some malware had infected my system and hijacked my search results.

Oh wait, now it's showing the old favicon. And comparing both, I don't like the new icon - it was tacky, and the thin lines somehow made it appear 'mean'. The colors, shape and size of the old ones are warm and comforting.

I prefer the previous one. Larger, clearer. Wonder what the philosophy is behind this; "Our image needs to be fresher, younger, more playful and less authoritarian"

Although I wouldn't say that I liked the old one, the new one seems to be even worse...just boring, really.

I predicted, publicly on Twitter, that Google is going to reveal a new logo soon. The reasoning is that companies rarely change just their favicon or just the logo, but usually change the whole lot, everything related to their corporate image, in one go. As such, it's a re-branding.

If I'm right, I will let you rent my crystal ball for a measly 10 PR9+ permanent links

I don't like it. I can't really explain why, it just doesn't "feel" right. I'm sure that's silly logic though!
