I think the value of no-follow links is that you can still get direct traffic from those links, especially if they are on websites with lots of traffic, so they are still worth getting.

I think your good rankings might be from excellent SEO and content and your other incoming links.

Rankings of web pages are determined not only by inlinks but also by content. Also even a few inlinks that are not-nofollowed may give a little extra boost to a web page.

No they are not worthless. Yahoo Answers is no follow yet it still generates a decent amount of traffic.

google does not give any value for nofollow, but still the onpage and other links are valuable. so try to get more links which doesnt have the nofollow attribute.
also maybe the keyword you are ranking isnt much tough as you think.

"A link is a link is a link"
Nofollow not only bring user traffic ( apart from the fact that Y! and non-G SE that do not comply - it's not SE wide protocol, it's only G invention ) but helps building brand/recognition a lot, especially when floating in the content waters of good context.

I second that "a link is a link is a links", at least that has been my experience. No/do follow, they both show and get indexed when I check for them.

My tin hat may be thicker than most but I like to sprinkle in some no follows here and there. Now or sometime in the future it may look unnatural to have 100% followed links. Also they can be a good/easy way to get a site or page indexed. I know of several of 3 minute authoritative link providers that use no follows but get crawled daily and allow you to link to internal pages. Thats a great way to get a new landing page indexed. Your industry may have prominent bloggers that use no follows in comments but send good traffic.

That's what I use them for but I spend about 85% of my link building time on follows.

Has anyone else noticed that Yahoo Answers has stopped linking? At least in some of the fields. Just text URL, no link.

No follow links does not crawl by search engines. But related links can make your website to get more traffic through the related keywords in the page content.

Search engine ranking is the main issue in SEO but at the same time for product or service promotion getting good traffic can be added advantage for your site. So try to generate links from no follow sites also. There are so many sites, forums, blogs etc. that have no follow attributes but could be very much worthwhile for you. Like I can show you one example- posting article in ezine is very important. It's also do follow. But article base is no follow but still very much helpful for sending good traffic to your site, if you can post any unique and informative content over there.

I believed that links with nofollow attributes still help improve the SERP. Even if they are not passing any link juice or helping in the serps, they still deliver traffic just like some social sites like delicious and reddit. Some would rank even if it is no follow maybe because of the keywords used or other way around.

hey, its good your website has good page rank and about the answer to your question, I can say that no-follow links are also very important as Yahoo recognize these links.

What Google says and what Google does can differ every once in a while. Just acquire the links and don't care about their technical implementation. Even a JS popup that doesn't transport anything SEO-wise (no referrer for analytics, no link juice) is worth it.

How do you use nofollow yourself, if at all?

When it comes to professional SEO and clients -- that's what thing. But when it comes to giving small business/site owners advice I'm not comfortable posting telling them they have to nofollow all commercial links.

You?

You're pointing out the slippery slope that Google is on here, Ruud. Anyone with lots of money can find ways of going right up to the edge of the Google Webmaster Guidelines and in effect creating paid links without them being visibly paid for.

SMBs and entrepreneurs do not have the ability to cloak their payments so it is easier to spot paid links. The question of using 'nofollow' in these situations is much more fraught with possible very adverse consequences.
