I would suspect not as, at the end of the day they are merely images, but can search engines detect specific types of advertising and penalise a site for using them?

I do not think so.....However, Google stops your campaign if you use Pop ups on the landing page of your PPC campaign so the definitely can detect them.

I would never have a pop up on my index page.

Detecting them is certainly easy enough through recognizing the window.open(); javascript, but what it can't so easily be sure of is whether the popup is an ad, or a helpful thing. However, commonly known tracking codes, domains, and such would easily give it away if the code was not in an external javascript. Recent reports abound that even external javascripts are now being examined.

Yes a search engine can if you trigger pn certain events then it could be checked. Whether a blanket filtering out of those sites using certain triggers would cause a rucus I don't know. Anyhow I've never used popups. THEY bug the hell out of me.

So Ammon, do you think adverts can restrict a site ranking well from a search engine perspective?

My old clients, dooyoo, have used every form of advertising known, including hideously annoying banners, flash, popups, popunders, and more.
