Newsweek has a feature on Search Engine Optimization this week, titled:

Hotwiring Your Search Engine

In it, they tell the tale of a shoestore in upstate New York that wasn't receiving much traffic until they hired a Seattle-based SEO named Rand Fishkin. Now the store receives three times as much business online as it does in its bricks-and-mortar location.

There's a great picture of Rand in the piece, with his trademark yellow shoes, and his mom.

The article does a nice job of getting search engine optimization more into the mainstream.

Congratulations, Rand.

What a nice picture, if you hide the text, you would think that this is an article about a Pop star! ;)
Very nice article, congratulations Rand! I'm glad SEO has come to a point where notorious newspaper talk about us!

The only bad point about that article is that Newsweek didn't give Rand a live link! ;)

Yeah, I wonder why they didn't. Maybe they read stufff about "bad neighbourhoods" ;)

Nice read though. B)

Great going, Rand! Now that's proud exposure!

I love this article by the way...

[...] Rand Fishkin, who performed an obscure procedure called a "search-engine optimization."

[...] Fishkin also peppered online bulletin boards [...]

[...] last month Google upgraded its search algorithm with a software update it called Jagger, a secretive scrambling of the variables it uses to rank sites.

Cloak and dagger ;)

Never pictured you for the "peppering" kind, Rand ;) (just kidding)

I like how:

...last month Google upgraded its search algorithm with a software update it called Jagger...

Google should name updates themselves, and always after aging rockers with a problem keeping their "little red rooster" in their pants!

Nice work Rand! You look like a Rock Star yourself in the closeup... Very well done ;)

Beautiful! Great job! Exposure to the max! I guess we won't be seeing Rand for awhile ;)

Oops, they practically gave away the link to Micks BH-site.... I'm sure he won't be happy about that (more clicks though :-)) - you can even still find his link in the cache there.... It's interesting to take a peek behind the curtains of that :-)

Rand -- why not change your avatar? That photo is really good!

As I wrote in his blog, the picture in connection with the text reminds me for some reason about Ford Fairline.

Congratulation Mr. Rock'n Roll SEO.

Thanks gang. This was the article that was pulled from Wired (in a smaller, more general form). There's a few inaccuracies, but in all, it's very flattering. I'm thrilled. I'll certainly let you know what happens tomorrow and this week as folks read the print version.

Supposedly, the magazine has 4 million weekly readers, so it could be even bigger than /.

Rand uses the fake beard to hide the fact he's only 12 :)

Hey Rand, I take full credit for spilling the beans to Brad about your shoes.

During my phone interview with Brad, I mentioned that you're hard to miss at SEO seminars. He asked why that was. I told him the first time I met you, you were wearing "these very bright yellow shoes."

The Newsweek piece includes part of the theme he and I discussed too, which was when he asked me if I thought search engines hated SEO's. He seemed fascinated by the "relationship" between the two. I told him they couldn't live without each other :)

Nice piece. Can I have your autograph?

Rand, the guy who put a rock star face on SEO and hangs out with his mom, to (yellow) boot. :-)

How's mom dealing with all this?

I like the new avatar, BTW.

I just got off the phone with her. She's pretty excited. We went over a bunch of changes to the SEOmoz homepage and we argued about leaving my personal cellphone number on SEOmoz (decision - we'll leave it for tomorrow and see what happens).

Avatar - thanks! EGOL has been nagging me to change to my photo for a while, and this thing has made it even more imperative...

Type-in traffic to SEOmoz is up quite a bit tonight, and I had my first ever comment from Matt Cutts on the blog.

p.s. she doesn't look old enough to be your mom!

Now that's the kind of talk that'll get you everywhere! Thanks Donna :)
