I'm interested in buying links in directories for a one-time fee in the range of $40-$50. I've already listed with JoeAnt and a few similar directories. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which directories are worth listing at?

I'd recommend Microsoft Small Business Directory, Gimpsy and Zeal too.

Business.com and Yahoo directory are also very reputed directories, but they cost $100+ ...

Apart from these, your money might be better well spent on Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing Ads or buying cheaper and more reputable links from other websites. General rule of thumb (which I follow), try to avoid paid directories that are new (2004 or later).

But if you beg to differ, than here's a good list of paid and free directories - http://www.strongest...directories.php

After a lot of hardwork i have collected a very good list of paid directories, where it is cheap and worth submitting to. You can see a good list here: http://www.paiddirectories.info

Do paid directories help with SERPS more than free directories?

I've got it in my head that it's a bad thing to submit to every directory that asks you to list with them. I'm trying to be selective to prevent sand boxing and also to prevent my site from looking like it is link farming...

I am ranked at 339 on Google for one of my keywords now so I've a long way to go!

Paid and free directories are mostly different with their content.
Paid directories tend to have fewer and cleaner entries, though.
Some paid directories may be older than free directories and have a slightly higher PR, but that's all.

Other than that, a link is a link, free or paid.

I'd suggest to create lots of content on your site to generate visitors and unsolicited links.
Submitting to free directories may give you a slight boot, can help you to get indexed, but that's all.
Paid directories are a waste of time, mostly.

If I spend a week spending money on paid directories, I'd rather spend the same week, keep the money and add some unique content to my site.

339 may be not too horrible, depending on your niche :)

My niche is Selection Criteria and Resumes writing (see the signature)

I could write lovely content about how to write them but then I am running a service and not an advice line.

Well thats my view anyway!

Take a look at this www.eldoops.co.uk - it lists a load of free to add directories - good quality as it appears to be hand edited - you cant add to it - but it lists a lot of other directory sites.

Its free now but my guess is it may go paid.
