The Livesearch Blog published their take on the new features and abilities of live.com yesterday in this article:

Relevance, Relevance, Relevance!

In it, they point out the following changes to their search:
  • Improved core relevance
  • Reduced Spam
  • Dramatically improved ”snippets”
    • Java script issues resolved
    • Acroymns Automagically expanded
    • Indented Navigational Links for top listings (like Google's site links)
  • Much bigger index!
  • Smarter Handling of Concepts in User Queries
Have you tried out the new search functions at live.com? I've done a few searches, and there are some interesting changes from one result to another that indicate that they are paying attention to what they perceive the intent behind searches to be.

I liked the search results that I saw for Audrey Hepburn, which showed images, news results, and related searches which deemed it important to include a link to a Marilyn Monroe search amongst the list (Do people who search for Audrey Hepburn also often search for Marilyn Monroe?)
  • Audrey Hepburn Biography
  • Audrey Hepburn Pictures
  • Audrey Hepburn Photos
  • Marilyn Monroe
  • Audrey Hepburn Movies
  • Audrey Hepburn Hairstyles
  • Audrey Hepburn Quotes
  • Audrey Hepburn Costume
What's your take on the new and improved live.com? Too little too late, or some nice steps towards competition?

I don't like their design... not consistent....

On the homepage they have nice tabs above the query box for images, video, news, etc... looks nice... They should continue that inside.

"Web results... Page 1 of 2,500,000 results"
Put that on the side... who cares?

I think that they need to hire a designer.

Much less relevant than google - ( lol.... even when my site is #1.

In the same vien in Webpronews a corporate VP "says they've matched Google in relevancy and have surpassed Yahoo".

They mention that a "Live Search Webmaster Portal" is to be released later.
