Matt Cutts, in his Pubcon 2010 keynote speech (yes, a year ago), said,

Don't look at us where we are today, but look at the direction we are moving and what we are focusing on, the big five are the mobile web, local search, social, blended results in the search engine results and HTML5.

Since then, of course, we've seen the proof that Google has indeed been focusing on these aspects of search.

If you have been ignoring any of these aspects, thinking they wouldn't be impacting you or your search results very much, it's past time to start reconsidering that stance.

Now that Google is integrating Google +1 buttons more heavily into their products, and enabling people to share the things they +1 directly to their Google Plus circles, the picture is getting more and more clear.

Stop being an old stick-in-the-mud fuddy-duddy. SEO of yesteryear is fading quickly. No, I'm not saying SEO is dead, but it has evolved into an entirely new species.

Imagine a scientist analyzing a one-celled organism and then believing he understands exactly how mammals' bodies function, based on his extreme understanding of the one-celled organism.

This ain't yo momma's SEO anymore, folks. If you didn't realize that before, I'm here to whip some sense into you now.

:whip:

Don't make me have to say :

If I had to pick one word to describe the direction in which Google is currently heading, I think it would be Intuitive. Not that they seem to be trying to implement intuition, but rather they seem to be better approximating it.

Intuitively, I DO want to be able to use the Web when I'm out running around.

Intuitively, I DO want to see localized search results for some queries.

Intuitively, I DO feel there are "good" sites and "bad" sites.

I think they are trying to correlate their offerings with what we want, as we express our desires in a measurable fashion.
