Hi

Your advise please.

I have a busy eCommerce site and some items keep going out of stock. I was told that 'hiding' them from customer view and then adding them back as stock arrived would upset google when it crawled the site.

I can not risk my google position, but it makes the site look messy and customers keep asking for delivery dates.

Will it do harm to keep removing and adding the same item?

Thanks

We occasionally have items that go out of stock. We <!-- comment out --> the "buy button" and place "temporarily out-of-stock" in its place. If we know when we will have more of the item we will give an estimated date. This will keep customers from asking about the item and you will still get some of their purchases.

I have never seen this practice harm our rankings because the item description and all other text remains on the page. If we removed the item description I would expect to lose some traffic and if the amount removed from a page was substantial your rankings could drop sharply.

Really... the solution to this is carry a deeper stock or reordering more frequently.
