Not sure if a 301 redirect is what I even want. I have played with it for one page at a time, and it is great. It is working for what I need it to do. My other redirect that I want should be simple, but I am clueless on how to accomplish it. If you type in mydomain.com/anything-else and it is wrong since I do not have that page I want it to redirect to my index page. It some reason goes to page on my site that says sorry this page does not exist.


I do not see something in my txt 301 section causing this.

Any takers on helping me here?

You can use the meta refresh in your 404 page to do that... META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh"

The correct behaviour would be to:
- create a custom 404 error page, showing the visitors, where to go (site sections), the most popular articles, with a search field and contact info to contact the site owner, also by using the form
- use the correct header (presumably) by using the 404 .htaccess code by providing the custom 404 page URL:

ErrorDocument 404 /404.php

Of course, you can specify the index page, but it's incorrect and not very helpful, because it won't tell the visitor that something went wrong and he'll try visiting the old URL again. Also, once he finds out that that page doesn't exist, he won't be able to know what to do, other than what your homepage provides.

Ideally, of course, you need to analyze your 404 errors in your web statistics and 301 redirect them to similar existing pages that'd help solve the same problem the old page used to solve. Or, if you can't find a similar page, you can re-create the old URL with a page with some narrow targeted content (or best of the web content, if you prefer ).

Thank you. I went ahead and decided to shrink my number of sites down, so I created a 301 and it is not working. Do you see an error?

The first part (the old url) should not be a full absolute url. Only the second part (the new url) should be.

It should be similar to:

Redirect 301 /thepagename.html http://www.newplace....hepagename.html

Where do I put META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" to use it to redirect all error pages to my home page. Any error would not be an old page, but a simple typo.

I don't recommend that you handle 404s that way. Instead, create a page called notfound.html (for example) that will give the user instructions on where to go next, etc. Then, in your .htaccess file, place this code:

ErrorDocument 404 /notfound.html

If you called your custom page something else, like 404.php for instance, then adjust the code above to reflect the name.

We have a good thread on what to include on your 404 custom page somewhere. Will try to dig it up.

Now that I completed my 301 redirect how long does it take to get the old link juice given to the destination site?
