This should be in the video hospital but I didn't see one :dazed:

I'm launching a site and thought I had all the bases covered until I discovered the video(s) could not be seen on an Android HFC or some acronym I can't remember now. Really blew me away since I went to Vimeo (paid version) instead of using YouTube for these intro videos. It could be resolved by now (too early to bug friends and family) as there is an option for paying members at Vimeo to upgrade videos to play on mobile in what they describe as:

"Enabling this option will convert this video to format optimized for mobile playback on supported devices."

Ha, supported devices! The videos have always worked fine on my Ipad, but now I get this surprise out of the dark.

Please check. Like I said, the problem could be resolved. If you do have problems please list the devices used.

Thanks

Thanks egol. I see no problems with Apple products. It's that danged android thing that may be the problem. Samsung, Verizon mostly.

There's always a mystery. No standardization in video the more I read into it.

Cindy Krum has some nifty tools that are free at first...https://www.mobilemoxie.com/

I've used them often but never for video.

Ok...it does NOT work on my Samsung Galaxy Relay 4G, Android v 4.04 For this cell phone, I can hear the video but not see it.

It works nicely on my Kindle.

Interesting. I wonder if it has to do with the age of the devices used? Kim? Are they recent?

I've also heard this can happen with YouTube as well with some mobile devices. It doesn't really turn me off that much as most of the audience will be homeowners (over 35 somethings) and not the younger generation...yet. Also more tablet and PC users opposed to mobile phones.

Okay let's take this one step further to see what's happening with a YouTube embed at the link below. Any differences with you Kim?

Geez. So I guess it's a Vimeo problem...but more testing probably required. I'm thinking what good is a freaking paid account. They are supposed to be able to detect what video player is required for different devices, html5 or flash. I'm thinking that's the problem. So much to know about video and here thought I was ready. Down right confusing for me. Thanks for taking the time Alex. I really appreciate it.

I think I have it figured. I need a PRO account ($160 year) Plus won't cut it. That danged place is not very specific on some things. It may be on their site, but hard to find without looking for similar complaints across the web and they are quite large. I also do fall under the category of promoting something. There's also a limit on embedded plays opposed to YouTube. Go over the limit and it's extra.

Should've done my homework.

Have you tried Wistia? I haven't used their product but I've dealt with them and their customer service is excellent. If it's not too late to change of course...though they do have a free option for up to 3 videos, so you could definitely try them out.

Thanks Kim! I'm going back to YouTube as these are only temporary intro videos. I thought the quality was actually better with Vimeo, but now I see no difference. I must have found the better codec for the Tube along the way, not to mention I was actually filming for analog and not digital with some of my YT videos. New HD camera..still learning. I'm the type that likes to play first and learn later. Not enough patience sometimes.

And you too Alex. Thanks. I'm not going to experiment any longer. Best to go with what works best.

I think playing is the best way to learn!

I wouldn't say YouTube is the best, it depends what you want from it. One of the advantages of a product like Wistia is you have the videos as if they were hosted on your own domain, hence your URL will show up in the search engines. I've just remembered Phil Nottingham (from Distilled I think) wrote a couple of really good blogs about video hosting if you're ever interested in looking more into it.

I did see some of those from Phil, looked again. Thanks for sharing. I particularly liked the custom embed code. Something I almost forgot about. Lotta great tidbits there. Social embeds, but I thought of that before. However not in the way a custom embed code can include it...gotta look deeper. Not sure about set to auto HD play..could create lagging/latency issues with some folks.

After looking deeper into default HD settings (recommended by Phil) on video it's telling me to avoid. One can have the best system out there but if the provider (ISP) can't deliver fast enough there will be problems. The same would hold true if you're set up on a wifi and your kids for example, spend all their evening watching videos or playing online games. There's just so much bandwidth to go around. I'm not a genius when it comes to all this, but it makes sense to forget about HD embeds for usability. Could be one one reason why all YouTube videos default to SD when the player button is pushed. BUT, I do see some that are set at HD (uploader choice)

Any folks here hang out at Starbucks or other popular wifi locations? How does their wifi handle the load?
