"Go through your email" is clever wording... it sounds like an actual person sneakily breaking into your account and reading your messages, but google already has access - they are the ones storing and displaying the email. I assume gmail ads work just like normal adsense - they are based on keywords included the page. Where it might be 'creepy' territory is if they took info from emails and used that to influence the adsense adverts outside gmail.

That's the really creepy part, who knows how they will use your information.  Knowing everything you know about google and everything you've seen and read, do you trust them?

 

There is one advantage to all of this.  Because google has access, they may use info they find in g-mails to determine whether they think you're a "Brand" and whether you deserve a Brand bump in the rankings.

 

It's worth a try - I would use a gmail account to send Brand signals.  I think they'll use every means at there disposal to accomplish their goals and it will probably work.  Regardless, it can't hurt.
