I recall hearing advice at a search engine marketing conference that keeping your avatar year after year is "better" for Google.  It was related to authority and consistency.

I really don't like this limitation.  Have any of you heard this and are there are any updates, or is it even anything to be concerned about?

Never heard of it. People change, if you do not change your avatar you are obviously not a person.

I change mine whenever the mood suits, which can be quite often.

Although not so much here.

I really don't think I want to see you naked and I'm sure google doesn't want to look at that.  ;)

Oh no, the nightmares will probably start tonight again. :)

I think the issue is more related to creating a Brand image.  If you never want that to happen and you'd like to confuse everyone as to who you are and how you can serve them, I would make frequent changes.

It's really hard work establishing a Brand .......

Like chuckfinley says. If you're building a voice or are a recognised voice in any industry people will come to know you by your avatar. If you suddenly change it they might not recognise your content any more. I've been thinking for a while that I need to edit a new photo as my avatar is a few years old now - to remain consistent I need those cherry bakewells on my eyes.

What jonbey says is important too. People change. If your avatar is years out of date, how will people recognise you at conferences/meetups? It could also be seen as dishonest. Luckily I still look quite like my avatar, though I don't wear those cherry bakewell glasses all the time.

Edit - a slightly amusing story - the first time someone came up to me and said "you're the guy with the funny eyes aren't you?"

"What?!" I thought, looking perplexed and mildly offended. This was a guy who'd written some of my favourite songs.

"The funny glasses?" he said.

Then I realised what he was talking about.

Having said that, I did notice that jonbey has gotten much better looking. :D
