I'm experimenting with the UX on form labels. I like in-field labels but they disappear on focus.

So this is my alternative: http://testblog.co.uk/js-form/

Does it work for you? Are there any major styling problems? If anyone has mistakenly upgraded to Win10 does it work using Edge?

Is the page going to rendered on mobile devices and small screens?

If so, form labels are placed ABOVE the form field.  Additional instructions are placed BELOW the form field.  It's not helpful for UX to have any words inside form fields because of the difficulty in seeing them by sight impaired users and in various lighting.

I see it working the same in both FF and Edge on Win10.

I don't qualify for mistakenly. It was on deliberate and on purpose.

Kim,

I like Luke's research and have followed his guidance for many years but I've been doing a lot of testing over the last few years and labels inside forms fields have proven to have good usability. One one of my plugins I split tested in-field labels for about 6 months, ran tests on usabilityhub and crazyegg and did a couple of surveys. Everyone was fine with the in-field labels.

So I'm sticking with them. This latest iteration hopefully improves the UX.

But I happy to be proven wrong.

I do like in-field labels myself, however I do not rely on a screen reader. One of the things I DON'T like about some in-field labels is when the label doesn't reappear if I delete what I typed. I know it sounds silly but if a person deletes their response and then goes back to later, they might forget what that field even was. I know because it has happened to me.

That's why my form puts the label back if you don't type anything.

The link at the top of this threads is no longer valid as I discovered some devices do their own thing and zoom in to increase the field size. So I've binned this idea.
