This is a topic about which I know absolutely nothing. Less than nothing. When, in my urbanized neighborhood, I pass hookah bars, it seems so weird to me...and personally unappealing.
So...admitting complete ignorance, I guess I'm okay on the look, both on mobile and desktop...but my experience is to poll the users and folks interested in the topic. Do they like it? Do they find it appealing. Not just ongoing forum members, but other folks generally interested in hookahs. They are the one's to whom you are addressing the website.
Can you run ads in something like craigslist and elsewhere to get people interested in hookahs to evaluate the site on yours and their behalf?
Now I noticed that since you first posted on this site back in 2010, google has currently killed your ranking for the head term, hookah. Those b*st**ds. Who the heck are they? Bing has the site on the first page...and yahoo has it on the 2nd. Google has really socked it to you. Do you know why????
Its gotta be a penalty or penalties....I varied locations when searching for your site...as when I searched google was showing local hookah bars first. But I saw the site in the 70's. I'd think that is a penalty driven drop.
How are the bounce rates now versus years ago. Isn't that your answer?
Yes about polls. I have some poll on flavor pages and display the results on brand pages:
Example of poll: http://www.hookah.or...hookah-tobacco/
Example of results: http://www.hookah.or...fakher-tobacco/
I plan on publishing nice graphic results of those polls and votes on the homepage as the next step in website improvement.
Yes to Google killing our ranking a while ago too. I suspect it was because i changed domains twice within a couple years. But honestly no other hookah website has as much quality information, videos, pictures as we do. I'm totally clueless as why Google is not raking us much higher right now not just on the "hookah" term but also for long tail keywords.
One reason for our low ranking is probably the fact that i do zero link building. There are reputable vendors who've put our "Trusted Hookah Vendor" seal on all their pages. I'm not sure if the site-wide link penalty still exists but I figured since it was coming from reputable sites it wouldn't matter.
My bounce rates have gone from 80%s to low 70%s. I'm hoping the new design will bring it down to 60%s.
