I don't pay much attention to Google; they are the little :) engine that just keeps chugging away sending me traffic so consistently that unless a threshold alarm goes off I get on with other stuff. That doesn't mean that I don't keep an eye on changes in Google results structure/format, such as their answer cards, knowledge panel::graph, etc.

Which brings me to the reason for this post: Moz's Peter Meyers Ranking #0: SEO for Answers, 26-July-2016, discusses his current research into Google's Featured Snippets: how to get your stuff cherry picked and the possible benefits.

After you read his article give Microcontent discovered - again, Cre8, 2008, a read keeping in mind what Dr. Meyers was saying.

Yup, a decade and more ago I was formatting content in a deliberate attempt to satisfy both skimmers and readers plus the search algos of the time. Turns out that it holds up well. :)

Yup yup the more things change the more they stay the same. If one builds for people they probably won't come without marketing but they will come back, apparently the same holds for googlebot.

There is no great secret to on page SEO. Just as there is no great secret to accessibility, usability, user experience, etc. Much, perhaps most, certainly in outline, have been discussed here at Cre8 since the beginning. If you as a webdev have been getting the fundamentals right, i.e. learning from Cre8 conversations for the past 15+ years you have not only had the benefit of great customer results but at no extra charge or effort great SE results as the engines catch up to what visitors desire.

Might as well enjoy the benefits of their using your 'step beyond the simple facts' for as long as they are willing to share credit.

Don't really get this and time will not doubt make me out to be completely wrong. But while the post was informative it doesn't really tell you how this can be of a) benefit to you apart from and b) whether it is even attainable if you wanted it (DA/PA/PR/BLABLA/WAAAAA). Google wants to show short stuff to people on mobile? Google wants to show ads on mobile alongside questions or whatever else they want to do. They want to do this like always by getting people to delimit their content so it can be served up because it's cheap to do.

I'm not losing any sleep over this because I don't rely on free traffic for my hotels. There is no point when there is money on the table that can be hoovered up by them following the approaches I develop.

Glyn:
Perhaps Google isn't an automatic default in all that they do? Especially as they are world leaders in beta forever (or until they get tired of a project and kill it off).

I certainly wouldn't want you to lose sleep, indeed it warms the cockles of my heart that you don't panic everytime Google twitches. :)

My point in this thread is quite simple: SEO used to be about bridging the discrepancies between what was best for humans and algos; if one built well for people then as algos adapt to be more humanistic the site gets the benefit with no additional effort - in contrast to those who traditionally have 'chased' the algo rather than build for their human visitors in the first place.

Clear as mud?

You guys above are great.  Keep it up!!!

Just discovered something that has changed.  Its internal inside google and I'm sure the change was instituted to make it more difficult for the rest of us to figure out how to market relative to search..which is google.

Several years ago we saw a couple of examples wherein groupons or Living Socials were generating what for us appeared to be extensive search phrases.  We captured these via our broad term search phrases.  They coincided with the Groupons.  I just tried to go back and find them and "measure" the impact.  Freaking f^%&*ing adwords has made it more difficult.

The groupons ran, as did many for a very limited time frame.  Our adwords campaigns caught the volume of searches.  It was interesting.  There were, from our perspective very high volumes of searches and they had to be the result of cut and paste of the titles of the groupons into google search.

From our perspective, which is relative to the volume of searches we see via impressions....those groupons generated very high volumes of searches within a very short period of time.  Those email campaigns were visible.

I searched for the campaigns and the web pages.  I found the web documents and the dates.

BUT..here is where those f(*^(_ing google adwords SOB's are making it difficult.  When I ran adwords for the short periods around the groupon events.....it wouldn't show me the data for impressions.  I had to run data for about a 7 month period around the groupons for adwords "history" to include those search terms.  In other words...for this hard data....they have obscured the impact.

Those M'F'ers don't want me to see the hard and precise data.  They have it.  They definitely don't want us to see it though.  Even if you are an adwords customer and paying them.   They are still withholding anything that might be of analytical value.

Seriously.  Those M'F'ers.   They control all the information.  They are a monopoly.  When will the EU, Britain, Canada, the US and others cut em off at the knees?   China did it.

My $0.02 rant for the day!!!!!  :emo_gavel: :emo_gavel:

I was - and still am - quite lost.

Why I decloaked to join the Cre8 conversation back when was because the emphasis here was 'chase the human visitor' rather than the 'chase the latest algo burp' prevalent elsewhere. Because here the consensus was/is that G was/is one of many traffic sources not the sole source of web manna.

I do know a smidgen of a bit about many things, however I'm far from an expert at anything far less a guru.

It's just a continual personal amusement how frequently the broader webdev especially SEO communities rediscover the wheel. :)

Yea, you are.

I wish I could go back to the day I last  thanked the GORG. After all, they did support six years of semi-retirement. I had rosy glasses on. Now, I'm blind as to who they are.
