  1. Further to what AbleReach said above, Have you checked some of the default settings on the All in one pack. By default particularly following any upgrades it can default category and tag pages back to a 'noindex' state which can have obvious impacts to the visibility of your site, outside of the homepage and post related pages.
  2. Think Miriam raises some valid points, however I think there is a way to phrase things, and a place to voice such comments. At the end of the day, if the concern is a valid concern, and not one purely based on personal perception, then there is a place for it. Random rants aimed at organisations doesnt do anyone any good
  3. Leaving the SEO argument to one side - I would suggest in the long term it may be looked at from an overall perspective. I have to wholeheartedly agree with the arguments agains the use of the hyphenated name. As regards the for argument, look at it this way. The use of keywords in the domain is one aspect of SEO, not the only aspect, and as such, as BWelford (and others) mentioned, I would consider other uses of the domain rather than base the choice of domain on such a limited aspect of a domains functionality. At the end of the day, your domain has a number of uses, firstly as how people know you (ie your location), secondly it has to go potentially across a number of channels in the long run (well we would hope so), so anything that is likely to stop people getting to your site (or in the worst case scenario - going to a competitor), is bad - and thus I personally would consider other aspects of the domain prior to the SEO (although ideally the two woudl work together)

Think you hit the nail on the head Ammon, until you have a good idea of the site, its performance and where/when site traffic comes from, making wholescale changes to the site is probably inadvisable. As Ammon mentioned, there are a number of things you can do outside the remit of on-page changes including link development, removal of duplicate content issues (the number of sites I have taken over where incorrectly implemenmted test areas exist that have been spidered) etc can all be done without having to put a single finger on any site code. Really can't go against anything Ammon says, really its case of knowing your client, knowing your audience, and implementing the right strategy accordingly.

I would suggest it would probably work similarly to the Google Base results that are returned on specific product searches ie Dual Fuel range cooker http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&r...earch&meta= This doesn't appear on more generic searches such as range cooker or cooker To the point anyhow, I would presume the 'functionality' of the term and the potential mindset of the client in terms of what they are looking for would need to be equated to a certain degree ie for a search such as seo the blog search would be applicable, however for a more targeted phrase such as 'seo agency' or seo lancashire Google Local (or nothing at all) may be a more suitable. (PS. Hope that makes sense - i confused myself halfway through that)

  7. Google really do appear to have upped the anty in terms of layout, not only on the Adwords Administration system , but also on the results pages. Maybe not been paying much attention but noticed a couple of major tweaks to the layout today. 1) To be honest it was only a matter of time, but Google Checkout has now been introduced to the PPC result set. I have included a snap shot of the image here - http://www.e-gain.co.uk/blog/google-introd...rps/2007/04/24/ 2) Noticed the ability to 'note this' whilst performing a search. Never seen this before, and didnt screen grab it at the time, however I would suggest this is one of a raft of personalised search features that are likely to be coming

    Agree with Donna, been using AVG for a while, and as good as any paid virus checker I've used
  9. Wow, won't say its suprising, but glad to see them looking at the bigger picture, rather than what I would presume is a larger offer
  10. Thats pretty much what Vanessa Fox said during her recent discussion with Rand Fishkin (aka Randfish), ie that it is better to test via Webmaster Tools before utilising the Sitemaps.org way of doing things.

    agreed Bill "What surprised me was the statement that search engines might treat meta redirects under 5 seconds as indications of spam." Surely that would vary from search engine to search engine though BTW more good bed time reading
  12. May I suggest listening to the Vanessa Fox interview on WEbProNews regarding the 301 process. As regards the reasons for unifying the domains. i have recently undertaken a similar process for a real estate client of ours who sells houses/apartments in a number of countries round the world. Originally there was a long winded process of seperate sites for each, which have now been unified under one site (generally - there are a couple of exceptions in core areas), with the old sites being 301'd. We have had no problems thus far, and in fact have seen significant traffic and performance increases as a direct result of the changes. HOWEVER, there were legitimate business reasons for doing so, and some of the smaller areas were limited in termms of the search engine visibility at the time. I personally would always evaluate the business reasons for undertaking such an exercise prior to researching best practise of doing so. Without knowing what you sell, or the current performance of the site, I would be reluctant to advise, however it is worth remembering, that for all the negative stories there are even more successful positives, and at the end of the day should you choose to proceed, 301's are the Google prefered method of redirecting. Have to say one comment within the article did make me laugh "The number of English-language blogs is under 24m, a comparatively small proportion of the population of the US (around 300m) let alone that of Europe (well over 700m)" Last time I checked the UK was the only English speaking country (first language anyhow) in Europe, so that 700m would be more reflective of around 70m. Suddenly does make a big difference.
  14. Completely agree ekStreme, search engines have come along way in a very short period of time, and as such, perhaps some period of reflection is required in order to make sure the technology is fit for purpose, otherwise long term it could be a case of square peg, round hole
  15. Have to slightly agree with rynerts comments to a certain degree. Of YSM! in particular we have seen a high number of 'spam clicks', which have left the site immediately on entry (Statscounter in particular was very good at highlighting this). Regarding the same client however, we did reduce the bounce rate quite significantly by - Developing applicable landing pages where applicable - Promoting a more positive message on the landing pages that engaged with customer 'requirements' immediately - Provided the user with increased options when landing on the landing page to other areas of the site - Provided the users with more compelling calls to action. The above decreased the bounce rate circa 30% from 64% to just over 30.
