How Do You Attribute Creative Commons Items (i.e. Flickr)

Recommended Posts

I just want to be sure I am properly using the creative commons photos I get from flickr.

Let's say I want to use this photo:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ella_marie/402786029/

The license is here:

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en_CA

It says basically, you are free to share and to remix under the following conditions:

"You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). "

Is this just a matter of putting a caption under the photo that says, "Photo by ellie, flickr"? Or is there more that I need to be doing?

Thanks guys!

For photos I always write "Photo by ellie". Then I drop them a message through Flikr with a link to the URL where I used their page. Had a few "thanks", no complaints. That is probably above and beyond what you have to do, but I always feel that there is always a chance that they may get exciting excited and show all their friends!

Also if they have a website / photo business I prefer to link to that though as this will obviously do them more of a favor.

Thanks guys. Michael, I must admit I didn't read that line before:

"Notice — For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work. The best way to do this is with a link to this web page. "

Jon...that's a great idea to leave them a line...it may bring my site some new visitors!
