My Friend's Domain Expired. Is There A Way To Get It Back?

Recommended Posts

This is kind of a long shot, but a friend of mine just tweeted that he let his domain expire and now GoDaddy wants a few hundred dollars for him to buy it back.

Does anyone know if there is any recourse for situations like this?

Gotta pay. Hundreds sounds strange, though, unless it's an odd extension.

A registrant can renew an expired domain name at no extra cost up to day 18. If they renew an expired domain name anytime between day 19 and day 42, they must also pay an $80.00 redemption fee. The domain name cannot be renewed after day 42.

A few hundred bucks is cheap compared to what could have happened. I'd just pay them and renew the domain for longer than my life expectancy.

And yes, they are crooks. Clever.

What a horrible registrar! There should be laws against this.

I have my domains registered with a company who take 2 debit / credit cards and send emails before renewal time, and allow you set auto-renew, and will probably not charge a small fortune should I screw up (I hope).

Godaddy DOES send out several warning emails in advance of renewal and has an auto renew option.

Not only do they send out several renewal reminders - they send them all with 30% off coupons (at least it seems like it).

I have one in my box 3-4 times a week.

How long has it been since it expired?

Thanks everyone. From what I understand now, it looks like the domain was purchased elsewhere and then expired and after the waiting period was picked up by GoDaddy.

In any case, he's not that attached to the domain name and is willing to move on to something new. It's more of a personal blog so it's not a huge issue.

I really appreciate everyone's input though!

There is supposed to be a 45-day grace period. I have accidentally allowed some domains to expire and was able to re-register them before the 45 days were up. GoDaddy's domain scarfing is downright predatory, in my opinion.
